MONOMINO is a textile studio creating quality handwoven goods for the home. Borrowing from mathematical terms, a monomino is a single square; a structural unit occupying a position in a rectangular grid. Much like weaving, these single squares are connected in various combinations to build shapes and patterns, block by block, thread by thread.
It is this process of creating patterns that drew me to weaving. After many years working as a technologist and computer programmer, I wanted to explore ways of working with my hands to make something tangible. I have always had a love for textiles and after my first experience behind a loom, I was hooked.
I weave on a 4 harness floor loom and a 4 foot frame loom in my studio in NY. I am inspired by geometry, minimalism, and musical repetition. I'm especially interested in the challenge of working within the parameters of the loom and the structure of the woven grid to create something soft and tactile. Weaving can be a meticulous and labor intensive process but it forces you to slow down and settle into the rhythm of the loom.
I founded MONOMINO in the winter of 2015.
